Cyber Security Tips
Help IT with Suspicious Email Snippets
Is the Email from a Trusted Source?
Does the content make sense for you to proceed? (Look for odd grammar mistakes)
- Do they use your actual name in the greeting?
When in doubt, capture a screenshot / snip of the email & send to Help Desk as attachment.
Keep it Safe!
Choose strong passwords. Use a phrase – length and spaces is better than short words with characters and it’s easier to remember.
- Hackers use published lists of stolen user names and passwords to try to break into other accounts. Check if your email is on one of these lists: https://haveibeenpwned.com/. If it is, are you reusing the same password for multiple sites? Update your passwords with a new one for each site.
Make it Easy
Use a password manager to help you store passwords. These can work across multiple devices including your phone, and most are free for home use. Try LastPass.com or Dashlane.com.
Protect your Home Computer
- Make sure your operating system is up to date
- Use a FREE anti-virus program, like AVG or Avast
- MalwareBytes can help protect your computer against malware
- Think you might be infected? Try Kapersky’s Virus Check or Symantec System
- Use OpenDNS.com[i] https://www.opendns.com/
This service allows you to visit only whitelisted websites
Feeling ambitious? Consider setting up two-factor authentication on your most important accounts: email, banking, benefits, etc. Requires a code from your phone & a password.
[i] Does not work for satellite internet.
